Losing weight is not generally recommended during pregnancy. Pregnancy certainly is not a time to be cutting back on nutrition or for high intensity exercise. However, that does not mean that pregnant women should not watch what they eat. Pregnant women have even more reason to be careful about what foods they put in their body.
Even if you begin your pregnancy overweight you should not attempt to lose weight. What you can strive for is gain a minimal amount of weight. However, you will not achieve this result by starving yourself. Instead, move to a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and proteins. Do not cut out the fat, instead look for healthy fats. Do wean yourself away from junk foods. Do not replace your meals with pints of ice cream!
There are other reasons to be concerned with what you eat during pregnancy other then your personal weight gain. Your nutrition is passed on to your child. The term "eating for two" does not apply to eating double the calories but it does matter that the nutritional quality of your food counts twice.
Talk with your ob/gyn about your concerns about your weight and a healthy pregnancy. They can recommend a professional nutritionist who can provide very useful guidance. Your insurance will most likely cover their services. Every Other Day Diet
