Losing Weight – The Value Of A Food Journal

Author: Mark Warner

They say home ownership is the great American dream. I think that has changed over the last 20 years or so. Now the great American dream is to lose some of the excess poundage we all seem to carry around. There are a lot of complex theories and plans for doing just that. After trying many of them, I've found one simple one that has made a huge difference – the food journal.

What is a food journal? The name says it all. It is a journal that you keep a list of everything you've eaten and drank during the day in question. It also includes the servings for each and approximate calories taken in. After trying different ways to drop the pounds, I've found the food journal is the thing that finally works for me. In fact, I've dropped 23 pounds in two months using it.

Why does it work? Well, it works for me because I can see the total of calories I am eating as I move through the day. This tells me two things. First, I know my total calorie intake for the day. Second, I know what foods are packed with calories and which are not. This has been a huge eye opener for me because I love to eat. I've learned that a cup of Haagen Daz from the convenience store is packed with nearly a thousand calories or even more. A sorbet from the same brand, however, may have as little as 300 calories. By comparing items, I've been able to make small switches in what I eat and cut my calorie intake down to 1,500 to 1,750 a day without feeling like I am on a diet at all. This is great!

If you want to take things further, I've found the best food journals are online. Being cheap, I go with free ones like FitDaily. They not only calculate the calories you take automatically, but they show the total nutrients you've eaten compared to daily recommended amounts. They will also calculate calories you use when exercise and create a calorie balance showing if you are expending more calories than you eat or not. All and all, this has really opened my eyes to how badly I ate in the past and how small changes have really helped.

If you are having trouble keeping the pounds off, you should definitely give a food journal a look. It has made a world of difference in my life.
