Running To Lose Weight - How Well Does it Really Work?

Author: Jone Dow

Running to lose weight is very popular around the world. In fact it's probably the first thing that comes to mind if you want to lose weight. It is after all a very popular method to stay fit and healthy. But is it the best way to go for someone who just wants to drop a few (or quite a few) pounds? The answer may surprise you!

While there is no denying that running is a good way to lose weight, there are also a number of pitfalls one can fall into that may result in you not only not losing fat, but actually gaining pounds! Obviously you want to avoid thosethings and actually lose weight. Below I will examine two of the most common pitfalls that so many people fall into.

1) Not following a diet - granted I am not a big fan of sitting with a calculator trying to count how many calories the thing you just ate has, but not watching what you eat can produce some disastrous results when combined with running. Why? Simple, when you run you burn some calories but you also become more hungry compared to if you didn't run. And this puts you at risk of over eating! That is you will eat so much more that not only will it make up for the calories you've burned, but it will go over it!

Thus you run into a paradox that you would've weighted less if you did not run at all. There was an article on a new site a while ago about a guy who came to this realization after years of running to lose weight. I am sure you don't want to be that guy, so watch what you eat!

2) Running at the same pace, the same distance all the time. Have you herd someone say things along the line of "I don't understand it. I run 3 miles four days a week and I am not losing weight at all!" I am sure you have. The reason that person isn't losing any weight is because their body has adapted and running 3 miles at that pace isn't much of a work out anymore.

What you need to do in a situation like that is change things up - either increase pace, or increase distance. Doing so will once again result in weight loss, that is until your body adapts once again.
